History of Romasha

Romasha was the first girl of a total number of eleven children. Of course, the riches were in the number of births and not exactly monetary value. Romasha spent much of her early years with the sister of Madan, working as a shop assistant. She often gave stories of her prowess at school and recited “To a Butterfly” by William Wordsworth while proudly claiming that she came third in a recital competition in her school district. At the ripe old age of 14 years, she was introduced to Roopnarine as a prospective husband.  So at the age of 14 years and four months, Romasha commenced married life and left behind the dream of the butterfly.

Romasha entered the home of Roopnarine as a young bride with sisters-in-law younger and older than her. As was the tradition in Indian households, she quickly assumed the role of a servant, being at the beck and call of her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law and walking long distances to carry water at home to wash the clothes of the extended household even underwear. It was a life of much hardship that, even today, she remembers vividly. In rare visits to his home, Driller, if receiving complaints about his daughter-in-law, would fly into a rage and proceed to abuse her physically. Roopnarine was helpless to act as he had ingrained respect for his father. Finally, in an act of great courage, he ran away with Romasha to a village called Penal where they set up a house.

By this time, Romasha had her first child at the age of 15 years and four months. Almost exactly a year after her marriage. Life was tough with a young baby and a husband hustling for work to keep the family afloat. Being a child herself, Romasha had no idea about the workings of the human body. She was told by some older ladies that once nursing, she could not get pregnant. Being a naturally chubby woman, she saw nothing surprising in that her weight remained constant after birth. She mentioned this to the village nurse and complained that she was not losing her baby fat, only to be told that she was three months pregnant. Precisely 11 months after the birth of her first child, she gave birth to a second.

With his penchant for hard work, it was only a matter of time before Roopnarine found a way to improve his finances. He purchased a taxi car and commenced the trade of a driver for hire. He moved his small family back to his home area of Siparia Old Road, into a three-family barrack typical of that occupied by former indentured labourers. It was here that by the age of 18, Romasha gave birth to her third child, the only one born in a hospital.

Now living in cramped barracks with three children, Romasha finally lost all her childhood. A mere three years later, Romasha gave birth for a fourth time in six years before the age of 21.  Romasha was the mother of Rajendra Ramlogan, the founder of  Traum House Lodge.
