History of Madan

Born in 1915, Madan was the son of Mooniah and Kowlessar.  He became an orphan in his early teens and was forced to fend for himself as an itinerant. Daily, he would wander around San Juan, Barataria, and Aranguez doing menial jobs to feed himself. He developed valuable skills as a cricketer and fondly remembered being selected to field as an emergency fieldsman in a cricket game at the Tacarigua Savannah. While fielding on the boundary, he had the distinction of catching the great West Indian allrounder, Sir Learie Constantine. The ecstatic reaction of the team resulted in the passing of the hat and the collection of seven cents for Madan. This was a mighty sum in 1930, and Madan treated his friends and himself to a cinema show.

Madan, while searching for work, met a stern gentleman by the name of Jangla Dass, a second son who operated as a true big brother to his younger siblings. He ruled with an iron fist. An ambitious man, he was always willing to explore business activities and got involved in cattle rearing.

Madan had a lucky encounter with Jangla and managed to persuade him to give him a part-time job assisting in cutting grass and cleaning the cattle pens. At this point, Madan had his first view of Mamin, the youngest sister of Jangla. Both parents of Mamin and Jangla died, and Jangla assumed the role of father. Mamin, as part of her daily chores, was required to assist in the rearing of the cattle. A sultry dark-skinned woman with curly hair, it was speculated that there was an African element present in the DNA of Mamin. Still, she often claimed, to the amusement of her neighbours, that her family had Madras links hence the curly hair. Mamin was too much for Madan to resist.

Jangla observed the shared looks between Mamin and Madan and quickly warned the young man to keep his distance. Indeed, his ambition was not a match between a young man cleaning his cattle pens and his youngest sister. Madan and Mamin used every opportunity to spend time together while avoiding the attention of Jangla. However, inevitably, Madan and Mamin disappeared to start a life together in the burgeoning oil village of Fyzabad. Madan was the maternal grandfather of Rajendra Ramlogan, the founder of Traum House Lodge.
